At a Glance — NetSuite Implementation vs Integration Consultant
- Implementation consultant: configures NetSuite for your business — chart of accounts, subsidiaries, roles, forms, workflows, data migration and user training
- Integration consultant: connects NetSuite to other systems through an integration platform such as Celigo or n8n, or through NetSuite’s APIs, and owns mapping, error handling and monitoring
- New to NetSuite? Start with implementation; scope integrations in the same plan so the data model suits them
- Already live on NetSuite? Most new work is integration: a new sales channel, a CRM, EDI partners, a 3PL or an AI agent
- Ask every integration consultant about OAuth 2.0 (new token-based authentication integrations end in NetSuite 2027.1), SOAP retirement (by 2028.2) and how they monitor failed records
What a NetSuite implementation consultant does
An implementation consultant gets NetSuite itself ready for your business. That usually means designing the chart of accounts and subsidiary structure, setting up roles and permissions, configuring forms, saved searches and approval workflows, migrating opening balances and master data from the old system, and training users before go-live. Some also write SuiteScript customizations. Their deliverable is a NetSuite account that matches how your business runs.
Oracle lists its partners in the NetSuite Partner Directory, which is a sensible first check for any implementation firm you are considering.
What a NetSuite integration consultant does
An integration consultant connects NetSuite to everything around it: an ecommerce store, a CRM, marketplaces, EDI trading partners, a 3PL, a payroll system, or an AI agent. The work is choosing the right tool (a prebuilt integration app, an integration platform such as Celigo or n8n, or a custom build against NetSuite’s REST API), mapping fields and records between systems, handling errors and retries so nothing is lost or duplicated, and setting up monitoring so someone knows when a flow fails. Their deliverable is data that moves between systems without people re-keying it.
The skills overlap less than people expect. A strong implementation consultant knows NetSuite deeply but may not know Shopify’s API limits or how to keep a sync idempotent; a strong integration consultant knows both sides of every connection but may not be the right person to design your chart of accounts.
Which one you need
| Your situation | Who to hire first | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Moving to NetSuite from QuickBooks or another ERP | Implementation consultant | The account has to be designed before anything can connect to it; plan integrations in the same project |
| Live on NetSuite, adding Shopify, Amazon or another channel | Integration consultant | NetSuite is already configured; the work is orders, inventory and fulfillment moving between systems |
| A connector keeps failing or creating duplicates | Integration consultant | Usually a mapping, retry or monitoring problem, not a NetSuite setup problem |
| Retail customers require EDI | Integration consultant with EDI experience | Trading partner specs, testing and compliance are integration work |
| Reports are wrong because the account structure is wrong | Implementation consultant | Fixing subsidiaries, accounts or item records is configuration work |
| Connecting an AI assistant or agent to NetSuite | Integration consultant | Access, permissions, logging and tool design are integration decisions |
Questions to ask a NetSuite integration consultant
- How will you authenticate to NetSuite? Oracle ends new token-based authentication (TBA) integrations from NetSuite 2027.1, so new work should use OAuth 2.0. See our TBA deprecation guide.
- Does any part of this use NetSuite’s SOAP web services? Oracle is retiring SOAP by 2028.2. A connector built on SOAP works today but needs a plan to move to REST.
- What happens when a record fails? You want failed records queued and visible, with retries that cannot create duplicates, not an email nobody reads.
- How do you handle NetSuite’s concurrency limits? Bulk syncs that ignore your account’s limits fail at the worst moment, such as a sales peak.
- Who owns the flows and documentation after go-live? Make sure you get the mappings, credentials and runbooks, not just a working integration.
- Will you test in a NetSuite sandbox with real records first? Production should never be the first test.
- Is our account getting NetSuite Next, and does anything you build depend on the user interface? Oracle says client scripts and form customizations that change page HTML may need review. See NetSuite Next and your integrations.
Questions to ask a NetSuite implementation consultant
- Are you listed in Oracle’s NetSuite Partner Directory, and at what level?
- Which businesses like ours have you implemented? Industry experience matters for item records, revenue recognition and inventory.
- How will you migrate our data, and how will we reconcile it?
- Who on your team handles integrations, or will we need a separate partner? Bring the integration consultant into the design early either way.
Red flags when hiring either
- A quote with no discovery call, or no list of the records and flows in scope.
- No answer on monitoring and failed-record handling.
- New integrations still planned on token-based authentication with no plan for OAuth 2.0.
- “We will figure out the integrations later” on a new implementation.
- No sandbox testing, or testing only on sample data.
Can one firm do both?
Yes, some firms implement NetSuite and build integrations. What matters is that the people doing each part have done it before. Ask who will actually build your integrations and look at examples of similar connections. If the implementation partner does not do integrations, involve an integration specialist while the account is being designed, so customer, item and order records are set up in a way the integrations can use. If you are choosing a Celigo partner specifically, our comparison of Celigo partners groups firms by the kind of project they fit.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a NetSuite implementation consultant and an integration consultant? An implementation consultant configures NetSuite itself: chart of accounts, subsidiaries, roles, forms, workflows, data migration and training. An integration consultant connects NetSuite to other systems such as Shopify, Salesforce, EDI trading partners or a 3PL, using an integration platform or NetSuite’s APIs, and owns mapping, error handling and monitoring.
Do I need a NetSuite consultant or an integration partner? If you are moving to NetSuite, start with an implementation consultant and plan integrations in the same project. If you are already live on NetSuite and need to connect a new channel, CRM, EDI partners, a 3PL or an AI agent, you need an integration consultant.
What should I ask a NetSuite integration consultant? Ask how they will authenticate (new token-based authentication integrations end in NetSuite 2027.1, so new work should use OAuth 2.0), whether anything uses SOAP web services (retired by 2028.2), how failed records are handled and monitored, how they respect NetSuite concurrency limits, who owns the flows and documentation after go-live, and whether they test in a sandbox first.
How do I check a NetSuite implementation partner? Check Oracle’s NetSuite Partner Directory, ask for implementations in your industry, ask how data will be migrated and reconciled, and ask who handles integrations, since many implementation firms bring in a separate integration partner.
Can one firm handle both NetSuite implementation and integration? Yes, some firms do both. Ask who will build your integrations and for examples of similar connections. If your implementation partner does not do integrations, involve an integration specialist while the account is being designed.
